It’s true that Marijuana is illegal according to federal laws. That said, several states have authorized and legalized marijuana for medical use only, allowing patients and caregivers to receive a medical marijuana card once certain conditions have met. The thing to remember is that not all states participate in this program and qualifying conditions vary from one state to the next. So far 14 states have chosen to legalize using marijuana for medical reasons. Here’s a list of the states: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
You must receive a recommendation from your doctor and meet specific qualifying conditions in your state in order to use it as a treatment option. If your state allows you to use a Medical Marijuana Card, you must become registered in your state and go through all the steps necessary to get medical marijuana. Again, even though individual states have legalized medical marijuana, federal law still makes it illegal.
Every state is different and have separate guidelines on how you can register for and obtain a medical marijuana card. Before you begin, it is wise to not only talk to your doctor but to also consult with an attorney about what legal problems you could face by possessing marijuana for medical purposes. There are some states who will not issue cards to anyone who has a criminal background. For instance in California, you’ll have to contact your county to register, fill out an application and provide detailed documentation of your medical records. Also, remember, there may be a fee for registering for a medical marijuana card in addition to other county fees.
